Alfred Maximilian Gruenther (1899-1983) was a military officer, educator, bridge expert, and author. Nicknamed "the Brain" by colleagues, Gruenther was respected worldwide for his extraordinary analytical and strategic skills as a staff officer and soldier-diplomat.
